Fox Fire Lab School

This project was a K-6 lab school connected to U.L.L. in Louisiana. I attempted to use natural and design elements to combat the large amounts of stress associated with traditional education. This was pursued through an application of biophilic and environmentally engaged design.

Objectives

Safety

It was important to not only make the school secure, but to avoid the impression of limitations that typical measures such as fences can have on occupants.

Using project based pedagogy as a goal the school accommodates recreation as well as stem and small engaged classes for better knowledge retention and exploration.

Centering the design around a courtyard allowed for classroom engagement incorporating the landscape as a part of the program while meeting multiple needs.

With sun predominately from the south year round, it was important to take advantage of northern winds and shading for outdoor interaction year round.

Allocating area by occupancy needs with a pie chart, I explored how to arrange programing with circulation. I also prioritized connections with views of exterior spaces.

Ground floor circulation was focused toward interaction with the central courtyard coupled with interactive programing such as rec., labs, and dinning.

Upper floor programming housed the bulk of classrooms, which engaged the exterior through green roofs and classrooms that could open for direct engagement with natural aspects, such as lighting and ventilation.
